Barrels, cratchboards & doors

Narrowboat bits & pieces

Work in progress 2022

Customers often ask me to paint items for their boats, this includes barrels, cratchboards & doors. For details of costs and different options regarding barrels, cratchboards & doors do send me a message.

Barrels & stands

Hand-painted canal art barrel and stand 2023.

Painted barrels are often seen sitting on-top of modern, leisure, narrowboats. However, although they serve no real purpose, barrels do look pretty! Often, I have barrels already painted in stock, keep an eye on my social media for latest posts.

Additionally, customers bring me barrels to repaint. Sometimes they are old wooden sherry casks or alternatively small plastic barrels, that once painted up look the part. If you have a barrel you would like painted, or are interested in buying one do message me. See the gallery below for more photographs.

Boat doors

Recently painted hatch doors 2023

Over the past few years boat owners have brought their hatch and stern boat doors to me to paint. Some doors have required a full paint starting from the undercoat up, others have just required decorative panels. As always, I try and give my customers different options to fit with everyone’s budget.

How it works

Customers supply me with their own panels or doors for painting. Importantly, this makes sure the panels will fit when finished. Additionally, I am sometimes able to paint doors in situ on boats. However this does need to coincide with my trading plans. Finally, do look at the gallery below for more examples of boat doors.

Wood Graining

First attempt at wood graining on Pea Green 2019

Sometimes referred to as scumbling graining is a traditional painting technique. Originally, graining was used on narrowboats to cover poor quality or mismatched wood, but today is usually just for decoration. Graining is a long process requiring multiple layers of paints, and different skills to get a good look. Wood graining, if done well is the ultimate smoke and mirrors.

Cratchboards

Cratchboards are found at the front of a narrowboat, these triangular wooden boards are often decorated with canal art. Similar to doors I ask that customers supply me with their pre-cut cratchboard for painting. As cratchboards are best painted flat I prefer not to paint them in situ.

To contact me

Finally, to contact me to discuss your requirements message me via email, Facebook, or Instagram.  I usually respond within a couple of hours.
