Horseshoes

whopper horseshoe extra, large horseshoe

Personalised, lucky horseshoes

Horseshoe for a new boat

Used horseshoes have traditionally  been  believed to be full of luck.  Depending on your point of view they can be hung upwards to keep the luck in, or pointing downwards to let the luck drip out. I am happy to paint your personalised ‘shoe either way! Working horses played a huge role on the canals during the working boat era. Some horses were still used well into the 1960s.

Horseshoe gifts

Lucky, hand-painted horseshoes make a perfect gift for all sorts of occasions. I have painted ‘shoes for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, house and boat names. I have also painted memorial horseshoes for horses that were much loved and no longer here. In this case owners posted me the horseshoes to paint. I charge £20 to paint your own horse’s shoe, extra if I have to clean it first. See the gallery below and photographs on this page for ideas.

The process

Undercoating a big whopper horseshoe

I buy my used  horseshoes from the local farrier.  They are then de-nailed,  scrubbed (a smelly job), holes cleaned, sanded, painted with 2 coats of undercoat, and 2 coats of top coat before I add the miniature decoration.  Once decorated all my ‘shoes are finished with a coat of clear external varnish.

Prices and ordering

A standard horseshoe with roses plus inscription is £20. Whopper ‘shoes, usually 17-20cm across, are £25 each. If you require flowers other than roses and daisies please let me know for a quote. Please remember  space is limited. I am happy to consider all inscription requests, but sometimes your wording might not fit.  Postage is an additional £3.30 or free collection when I am trading from Pea Green
